We are seeking a Product Engineer – Powertrain Emissions to support hands-on aftertreatment hardware testing, validation, emissions data analysis, test planning, and calibration development. The role will focus on evaluating emissions performance, identifying calibration concerns, analyzing test data, and supporting optimization of engine emissions calibrations and aftertreatment performance.
This is a hybrid position requiring 4 days per week in the office. Agency employees are required to be onsite from the first day.
Plan, execute, and support vehicle, powertrain dynamometer, and/or engine dynamometer testing at internal facilities and external vendor locations.
Support testing and validation of low-emission technologies against future emissions standards, including ACCII Stand Alone US06.
Identify potential calibration concerns and issues encountered during testing and communicate findings to technical specialists for resolution and guidance.
Perform post-processing of test data files using supplied or alternative vendor tools.
Extract and analyze key statistics for emissions compliance and calibration assessment.
Conduct detailed analysis of emissions test data and provide data-driven recommendations to optimize calibrations and address issues.
Summarize test findings, data analysis results, and recommended actions through clear technical presentations.
Use data visualization methods such as boxplots and modal cumulative plots to communicate technical information.
Track and maintain accurate records of test vehicle status, including fuel types, hardware configurations, calibration levels, and relevant modifications.
Participate in test planning to ensure testing aligns with program goals and timelines.
Prepare and submit Test Requests (TRs) on a weekly basis to facilitate required testing activities.
Develop, optimize, and validate full-cycle emissions calibrations, including cold start, warm-up, and hot stabilized conditions.
Support calibration activities targeting SULEV30, ACCII, and Tier 4 gaseous and particulate matter tailpipe emissions standards.
Develop data acquisition lists and record data using appropriate acquisition software.
Verify data integrity, including sample rate, alignment, and reasonable parameter values.
Develop naming conventions and data storage systems that allow test files to be easily located and accessed.
Evaluate test data and develop changes to engine emissions calibration to reduce tailpipe emissions and optimize aftertreatment performance.
Execute predefined test plans and apply structured problem-solving processes to resolve technical issues.
Prepare technical documentation, spreadsheets, and presentations to communicate testing, findings, and next steps.
Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
3+ years of experience in emissions and emissions testing.
3+ years demonstrating a fundamental understanding of internal combustion engine function.
Solid understanding of emissions regulations, certification processes, and technologies used to reduce emissions.
Advanced problem-solving skills.
Strong leadership skills and a strong drive for results.
High technical aptitude.
Ability to manage and resolve challenging, complex issues.
Experience in project planning and management, including managing large, complex projects.
Strong oral and written communication skills for leading group projects, issue resolution, and management reviews.
Analytical and problem-solving skills.
Experience with test planning, data acquisition, data analysis, data integrity, and data management.
Technical communication and technical documentation skills.
Experience with calibration and testing.
Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
5+ years of experience in emissions and emissions testing.
5+ years demonstrating a fundamental understanding of internal combustion engine function.
5+ years of Product Development experience, including processing and delivering programs from concept through production.
5+ years demonstrating the ability to analyze, plan, and solve sophisticated system problems related to engines and emissions.
Hybrid position.
Requires 4 days per week in the office.
